• I haven’t written a long post in quite a long time, but recently, the topic of 420 has been on the minds of many. Normally, such things would not irk me this much, but after a heated argument with my family, I feel an incredibly strong urge to rant.

First of all, to all you anti-pot people, you possess the freedom of speech, as does everyone else. I have no problem with people that are against marijuana because some of my closest friends are anti-pot use. That being said, just because I am pro-marijuana does not mean that I want to smoke it every day. Because if that philosophy were true, that means I would be a lesbian who eventually wants to get married to my significant other just because I support gay marriage. No, I am by no means the most educated person on this subject, nor am I use a huge pothead that is dying for marijuana to finally be legalized once more. I just feel compelled to speak out because I believe that some of you are sincerely clueless on this subject. I’m not writing this in order to convince and encourage people to use marijuana, because if I were, I would outline all the pros of marijuana/hemp, or give some examples of the famous celebrities that are regular users of this substance and how it has bettered their careers or lives. All I am trying to do through this rant is get some of you to open your minds and try to understand the other side of the story for a change.

Yes, you can technically get addicted to marijuana on an emotional level, just as you can to video games, shopping, or even sex. You, however, cannot get physically addicted. What I mean by this is that you cannot experience withdrawal from not smoking marijuana. Hell to the yes, you can miss it. And yes, maybe for some people they may experience loss of appetite or some other change in behaviour. However, that is all in your mind. Your body will not physically become ill due to a lack of marijuana. I believe that those who claim to be addicted to marijuana are not specifically addicted to the substance itself, but rather, the act of smoking it and the feeling of being high.

Marijuana in itself does not have the ability to kill hundreds of thousands of people as alcohol or tobacco does. However, all anti-marijuana persons argue with the rebuttal that it ruins people’s lives because it causes them to stray away from doing productive acts and thus, becoming a “lazy bum”.. But that argument can be used on nearly everything! Compulsive usage of anything can lead to some sort of downfall, may it be physical health, emotional stability, social life, etc.

No, I never once implied that the use of marijuana is healthy or good for you. Yes, I’m quite aware that inhaling any burning substance into your lungs is undeniably unhealthy. But everything in this world is unhealthy! The food that we consume daily is unhealthy, the sun we sunbathe in is unhealthy, the technology we’ve become so attached to is unhealthy. It’s just the matter of how big of a role you allow these “things” to play in your life.

My mom was baffled when I said that I would definitely grow my own marijuana if it were to be legal. Does that mean that I’ll grow mass amounts to hand out to my friends or sell to minors? Of course not. Does that mean I’ll smoke it more regularly now than before? Absolutely not. It just means that I want to ensure that my plant will be pure, and has no traces of harmful chemicals or toxins. If anyone had the option to grow their own vegetables and fruits, would you not?

So many of you have looked down upon those who celebrated 420 because it is Hitler’s birthday as well as the anniversary of the horrible tragedy of the Columbine shooting. But can that really be a reason to discourage others to celebrate April 20th? No. Bad things happen every single day. Using a recent example, I guarantee that there are thousands of people whose birthday lands on March 11. However, since there was a Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan on that day, should others condemn them for celebrating their birthday? No. The majority of the anti-pot people I’ve conversed with are so strongly against marijuana, but yet, have the time of their lives consuming mass amounts of alcohol. By all means, go ahead hating marijuana, for that doesn’t impact my life in the slightest bit, but at least don’t run your mouth to me about how much marijuana ruins the lives of people if you’re going to go kill your liver by getting hammered at every chance you get.

So yes, marijuana is not necessarily a healthy thing for people to do, but hell, everyone engages themselves in acts that may be unhealthy for the mind or body. This is just the way some people choose to live their life. So if you want to be against marijuana, have a grand time doing so, but at least attempt to educate yourself on the subject before opening your mouth. Otherwise, shut the fuck up and stop being a buzz kill. Just leave people be and let them smoke weed in peace. Jeez! /end rant
